Live Fire Tuesday: New Magnolia Brewery Preview with Coltivare Sous Chef Jonathan Ferguson

Live Fire Tuesdays continue at Eight Row Flint and the month of October will be kicked off with Coltivare sous chef Jonathan Ferguson and New Magnolia Brewing Co., opening in The Heights in late October.

Chef Jonathan has a personal relationship with the project — the brewery is owned by his family and he will be helping part time as Coltivare will still be his main focus. “I will curate a rotating list of food for the food truck and pop ups, as well as pair beers for the patrons to enjoy.” You can also catch Chef Jonathan guest bartending on a couple of occasions. New Magnolia Brewing Co. will showcase two different kinds of beers for Ferguson to pair with his food for Eight Row Flint’s Live Fire Tuesday — the Tart Cherry Berliner Weisse and the Smoked Wheat Grodziskie SMASH.

Due to open by late October, New Magnolia Brewing is the re-birth of the original Magnolia Brewery from 1893, which was located in Downtown Houston along Buffalo Bayou. In its day, the original Magnolia Brewery was one of the largest breweries in America, producing close to 200,000 barrels of beer per year. In 1913, the original Magnolia Brewery won Grand Prize for their Southern Select beer at the last International Conference of Breweries, beating out 4,096 competing brewers worldwide. It lasted until 1935, when the great flood of Houston devastated the entire faculties, leaving only the corporate office behind — which today is the Magnolia Ballroom in Downtown Houston.

The New Magnolia Brewing Co. pays homage to Houston’s rich beer history and the city’s strong connection to the Eastern European cultures that designed and built Houston. A large offering of beers will incorporate both old world and new brewing techniques with a high rotation and variety of beers.

The New Magnolia Brewing Co. located at 1616 Bevis. St., operates in a 7,500-square-foot building and brews on a 15 barrel, four vessel brewhouse, under a brewpub license. The space is family and pet friendly. Most recently, Sean Spiller, formerly of Jester King in Austin, has joined the team as head brewer.
